The short answer
A card-machine setup can involve separate terminal, processing and software agreements. Identify each supplier, minimum term, notice deadline, recurring fees and written cancellation process. Ask for an itemised exit figure; the provider name alone cannot establish your obligations.

Four dates to find
Identify the start date, minimum term end, notice deadline and the earliest effective cancellation date. Add separate dates for any hardware rental or acquiring contract. A calendar reminder is useful only if it is tied to the correct notice requirement.

No-contract, rolling or fixed-term: what is the difference?
“No-contract” commonly describes no minimum term, rather than an absence of terms. A rolling agreement continues until ended under its notice rules; a fixed-term agreement has a stated minimum commitment. Check the written minimum term, notice period and cancellation charges for every service.
Compare rental, subscription and processing costs as well as flexibility. Hardware and acquiring can have separate commitments. These are contract types to understand, not a claim that a no-contract offer is available through Awais.
Check what can change
Review rate-change clauses, additional fees, hardware replacement terms, renewal arrangements and the process for ending the service. Ask what happens if you move premises, close, sell the business or add another location.
takepayments states that merchants need a separate acquiring agreement under which transaction and other charges apply. A headline contract length does not describe every obligation across all the paperwork.
Make the exit cost specific
Ask for an itemised written exit figure with the date it applies to. List remaining rental, early closure charges and any return requirements that apply to your own agreement. Avoid relying on a verbal assurance that switching is free.
Keep the final agreed proposal, signed documents and relevant correspondence. Enter your approximate contract timing in the payment check; no document upload is required.
Ask which terms apply to this purchase
A statement about a product range is not necessarily the term in your own proposal. Check whether the contract describes rental, a hardware purchase, payment processing or a separate software service. A minimum-term headline can apply to only one part of the arrangement.
The Payment Systems Regulator publishes requirements concerning certain terminal-hire contracts under Specific Direction 16. Its scope and conditions matter. Ask the supplier whether and how those requirements apply to your agreement; do not infer a universal cancellation right from an online headline.
Use a contract register
Keep one row for each supplier with the service, start date, minimum-term end, notice requirements, fee-change process and equipment-return details. Add who is responsible for managing that agreement within the business.
If a branch is being sold, relocated or closed, ask what approvals or termination steps are required before moving equipment or assuming the new operator can use the account. This checklist helps prepare questions; it does not determine disputed legal rights.
Your comparison checklist
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which legal entity provides each service? | You may have more than one contract |
| What is the minimum commitment in pounds? | A monthly figure hides the total exposure |
| When and how must notice be given? | Missing the correct process can affect the exit date |
| Which fees can vary and how are changes notified? | Your starting price may not describe later charges |
| What equipment must be returned? | Ownership, damage and return terms can differ |
Common questions
Are all card-machine contracts the same?
No. Compare your exact terminal, acquiring and service documents.
Can you tell me my exit fee from the provider name?
No. It depends on your signed agreement and timing. Obtain a written figure.
